If only Barack was a white man

September 29, 2009

There was a time, not too long ago when he could do nothing wrong. In politics, they say, a week is a long time. For Barack Hussein Obama, from January to September, 2009 has been time enough to get back to reality. He has not made any blunders. In fact he has tried to stick to the promises he had made. In politics, as in life, things do not work out to perfection. I will not count his doings and ‘failures’ here, suffice to say that there is a section in America that seems to abhor anything he says or does. It could well be that this same people voted Obama during the elections, but now that he is the president they just cannot accept him as ‘their’ president and Michelle Obama as the first lady.

Former president Jimmy Carter termed this phenomenon as racism. Obama tried to side step the issue when in one of his TV interviews he pointed out that he was ‘a black man before he became the president’.  But then what could one expect Obama to say – that Americans are racists? Jimmy Carter was just being candid when he talked about racism as the reason for the way Obama was being heckled and jeered at by people on various issues, most prominently the health care issue.  Obama, it seems was startled at first but then took this obduracy in his stride and tried to push on with his agenda with a greater vigor. He went to the extent to say that he would be a one term president if his proposals were accepted. There must have been some very compelling reason why the man in the first six months of presidency has had to climb down so far as to say that he won’t fight elections for the highest office again. It is clear that Obama sensed resentment to him and his plans, perhaps more to him than to his plans.

And now there is this news that has made one cringe in horror. There was this poll on whether Obama should be killed. Fox News has reported it thus:

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a “poll” posted on Facebook that asked users the most unsocial, unspeakable question: Should President Obama be assassinated?

Edwin Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said the agency will take “appropriate investigative steps” in connection to the survey, which was posted on Saturday and was quickly removed when Facebook employees were alerted to its existence.

“We are continuing our investigation,” Donovan told, declining further comment.

The poll asked respondents: “Should Obama be killed?”

The possible answers were “no,” “maybe,” yes,” and “yes if he cuts my health care.”

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said a “third-party application” enabled an individual user to create what he said was an “offensive poll.”

The virtual world has a lot of freedom of expression. I am all for freedom of expression. Were it not for the world of the web we may not have understood the mindset of people. This poll on Facebook reflects the kind of hatred that some people have for Obama. They just cannot come to terms with the fact that a colored man is the president of United States.  They see the black and other colored people as inferior and one who cannot take the lead. Such people find it difficult to see their own selves in a leader who is not of their skin tone. They take them for people who are to be ordered around and ones to be told what to do. They are finding it difficult to accept him and his family as a role model. America may have elected Obama as the president but that does not make them color blind as many would like to believe. I shudder to think, as to what can happen if Obama made a genuine mistake, a la Bill Clinton or Richard Nixon.

One could argue that Obama’s success was as a result of the economic downturn and an unpopular war that has seen body bags being brought back home. That his electoral success was because of the mess the world was in created by most accounts by a president who did not know what he was doing. They voted for him out of sheer desperation and now when things are looking up they have had a change of heart and are finding it difficult to digest what they had first bitten off in a surge of panic. Is this Obama’s fault? He is trying his best and making the right noises.  When he goes out and given five interviews in a day to various TV channels, one begins to acknowledge that he is also a human being after all and he does react to the way people are behaving around him.

It is not that it is only the Americans who are finding it difficult to get to terms with a black president. The Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has mocked the Obama’s more than once. He has pointed out that not only is Obama tanned, but his wife Michelle has also the same ‘tanned’ skin!! ‘The two of them sunbathe together, because the wife is also tanned’ he is reported to have said recently. Italians can shrug off Berlusconi’s utterances but this does leave a bad taste in the mouth, besides it shows that such overtly racist comments by a prime minister who is a self confessed philanderer are acceptable in his country.

My fear is that Obama may react to this constant barrage – sometimes not so subtle, in a different way. He may feel the need to show as to who is in command and who runs the show. His ire may fall on a people far away in the Middle East. Bush found Iraq as the whipping horse, Obama may decide that he needs to assert himself and may decide to not only make a surgical strike on the nuclear installations in Iran but also to enter Iran so that he can manage a regime change, tell the Mullahs to go and bring in moderates like Mousavi in the forefront. A lot of foreign affairs decisions are made on local issues. This could be another instance. Bill Clinton found the need to bomb Iraq when the Lewinsky affair was at its peak, Barack Obama may decide that enough was enough and that he needs to show as to who is the man in the room and decide to enter Iran. His lack of success in Afghanistan, besides the genuine security concerns of Israel, especially now that Iran has test fired a 2500km range missile could be reason enough for Obama to do something he would have handled differently. One can expect sanctions on Iran shortly. The Russians should back American initiatives against Iran and a brief sanction could well be followed by a NATO surge against Tehran.  Another war on the horizon!

If only Barack was a white man!!!
